One of our favorite things to do while on Maui is to take an outrigger tour. I snapped this photo just before we launched in the early morning and the sea was very calm, making it very easy to get past the waves for a quiet run around south Maui. We found sea turtles getting their “breakfast” along with snorkelers (who are watching the sea turtles!).
What makes the outrigger canoe different from others is the use of the ‘ama’ or float that stabilizes the canoe. A fun thing I learned during one tour was that there is a bit of fabric between the two arms that secures the float to the main body - this forms a little ‘seat’, which the locals call “The Princess Seat”. This is because everybody on the outrigger needs to paddle to get us to where we're going - and as we all know, princesses do not paddle - so they can enjoy the ride on this special spot. lol
